Getting Started with ChatOps

Turning ChatOps from an idea into reality at your organization starts with deploying a workplace messaging service that brings people, files, discussions and tools (via webhooks and bots) together in one central interface. (We’re a bit biased here, but we believe Mattermost is the perfect tool for the job.)

Once you’ve deployed an extensible, customizable messaging tool, it’s time to get everyone on board by creating a culture that buys into the promise of ChatOps. If no one understands the benefits of ChatOps in the first place, it’ll be extremely difficult, at best, for your company to unlock its full potential. It is therefore critical to clearly demonstrate how ChatOps can help make everyone’s lives easier while increasing the effectiveness of the organization.

Here’s how to do that:

  1. Create project- and team-specific channels
Organize all relevant discussions, files and people in dedicated channels, granting permissions on an as-needed basis. Gone are the days of searching countless folders, drives and cloud storage apps to find what you’re looking for.
  2. Use your messaging platform to run meetings
Employees can collect their thoughts and post their questions, comments and concerns ahead of time to make meetings more productive—which helps everyone reclaim big chunks of their workweeks.
  3. Create “off-topic” channels
Stumble across something interesting on the internet? Trying to arrange an after-work happy hour? Use off-topic channels as virtual water coolers where employees can socialize and get to know each other.
  4. Automate as many tasks as you can
Use webhooks and bots to automate tasks wherever you can. Start with the easiest ones and move on to the more challenging ones. Taking routine tasks off everyone’s plate will increase productivity and employee happiness.
  5. Link to appropriate apps and tools
Different teams rely on different tools to get their jobs done. Customize channel headers to link to the right tools and apps. For example, headers can send employees to shared wiki pages or issue-tracking systems.

It may take some time before your employees become comfortable with a new way of working. But once you’ve clearly demonstrated the transformative nature of ChatOps to your team, it’s only a matter of time before your organization starts making better decisions in less time.

For the best results, start small. Roll out ChatOps with your own team first. Once you’re comfortable, invite colleagues on other teams to observe how your team uses ChatOps. They’ll be inspired and come up with ways ChatOps can similarly benefit their own teams.
